Two hours north of Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh grew wealthy on 19th-century tin mining and still carries the look of that era — wide colonial-style streets, ornate shophouses, and the grand old Ipoh railway station, sometimes nicknamed the "Taj Mahal of Ipoh" for its domed, colonial-Moorish architecture.

The city is ringed by dramatic limestone karst hills, several of which have been hollowed into cave temples over the past century. Your guide will bring you to one of these atmospheric cave temples, where shrines, stalactites, and the occasional shaft of natural light combine into one of Peninsular Malaysia's more unusual places of worship.

Back in town, spend time exploring Ipoh's Old Town on foot — the same streets that inspired the city's reputation for good food. Ipoh is famous across Malaysia for its white coffee (brewed with margarine-roasted beans and condensed milk) and its bean sprout chicken, and lunch is a chance to try both. Along the way, look out for the murals and street art scattered through the old town's back lanes, a more recent addition to a very old city.
