About the Journey

The drive from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar covers around 450km up the North-South Expressway, roughly five hours depending on traffic and stops. As the journey heads north past Ipoh and into Kedah, the scenery changes noticeably — dense oil palm gives way to Kedah's open padi fields, framed by limestone hills like Gunung Jerai in the distance.

Alor Setar itself is Kedah's royal capital, and its skyline is anchored by two landmarks: the black-domed Zahir Mosque, completed in 1912 and among the oldest and largest mosques in Malaysia, and the modern Alor Setar Tower nearby. For travelers heading onward to Langkawi, GCRIDE can drop off directly at the Kuala Kedah jetty in time for the ferry, saving a separate local transfer.

Things to Do in Kedah

  • Zahir Mosque — Kedah's grand state mosque in the heart of Alor Setar, open to visitors outside prayer times
  • Alor Setar Tower (Menara Alor Setar) — observation deck over the city and surrounding padi plains
  • Kedah's padi fields — best seen along the roads north and east of Alor Setar, especially near harvest season
  • Pekan Rabu — Alor Setar's well-known market for local snacks, dried goods, and souvenirs
  • Kuala Kedah jetty — ferry connections to Langkawi, about 30 minutes from Alor Setar
